There is no question that construction workers toil in one of the most dangerous industries in the nation. Each year, many construction workers are injured, and some are killed, in accidents involving falling off roofs and other high structures, heavy machinery accidents, and a variety of other serious accidents involving the use of power tools.   We also tend to see a lot of vehicle accidents on construction sites, due to the use of over-sized vehicles, which often have poor visibility.

However, a work-related injury or even death can also be the result of intentional violent conduct committed by a co-worker, company vendor, or even a third party assailant.

handcuffs1According to a recent news article from USA Today, a mother in a child custody dispute killed the social worker assigned to her case and is suspected of killing three members of her own family. Authorities say the 40-year-old mother was upset because she had lost custody of her nine-year-old daughter and went to the social worker’s office with a .270 caliber rifle. As the social worker was leaving her office by the rear door, suspect allegedly fired at social worker, hitting her in the upper torso and upper extremities and killing her.    Police believe that at least one of the gunshots was fired at close range. While many people come to the hospital after injury or illness, it is often overlooked how dangerous a hospital environment can be for those working there. According to a recent news article from CBS, a hospital worker was injured after an assault by a patient.

mgySe7yAuthorities say the 16-year-old patient was admitted to the mental health division of the hospital in a secure part of the state-owned facility. This patient allegedly attacked a female hospital worker, causing a serious injury. It is alleged the patient grabbed the employee and shoved her head into a brick wall. The patient is alleged to have kicked the victim repeatedly, causing additional injury. The injured worker was treated for her injuries at hospital, though there has been no update on her condition as of this time. Continue reading

According to a news report from the Sun Chronicle, an employee at a Massachusetts car wash was recently killed on the job. Authorities say the employee was working at the Malden, Massachusetts car wash when he was struck by a car owned by a customer.

car-wash-4-1508128A representative from the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office released a statement saying the car hit the 28-year-old employee from Everett around nine on a Sunday morning. The car was exiting the wash bay while employee was busy working on another customer’s car, and he did not see the car that was about to hit him. Continue reading

Working on the side of a major highway is one of the most dangerous jobs in America. It is for this reason we see all of the reflective orange signs warning us to drive carefully as we are about to enter an active work zone. It is also the reason all workers are required to wear reflective orange and yellow clothing and be careful to stay clear of any approaching traffic. However, there is no question that no matter what precautions drivers and workers take to prevent injury, there will still be many serious accidents each years, and some accidents will be fatal.

According to a recent news report from the Boston Globe, a worker was injured on the job during a renovation project in the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Boston. Witnesses say employee was on second-floor scaffolding erected on the outside of the building when he hurt his knee. Normally, a knee injury on the job would not make news, despite the fact that it could have potentially devastating consequences for the injured employee. But, in his case, he could not lower himself to the ground.

mWynm5YHe found himself stranded on the raised scaffolding and had no way to get down. His coworkers called first responders, and Boston firefighters arrived on scene to help the injured employee get down to the ground and get medical treatment. Once Boston Fire Department (BFD) personnel got to the Charles and Revere Street location where the injured worker was trapped, they were able to use a large ladder to get him down and onto a stretcher. From there, they assessed his condition and transported him to a local Boston hospital for treatment. There has been no report as to how the worker injured his knee. Continue reading

On June 10, 2015, an ironworker was helping to build a new parking structure at Boston Logan International Airport when he was involved in a serious on-the-job accident. Authorities say victim was on the third level of the parking garage under construction and was helping to secure a massive concrete platform to the structure.

mSeL02uWhile he was attempting to secure the concrete platform, it broke free from the crane that was suspending it, and the platform and the workers fell approximately 40 feet to the ground. In addition to serious impact from his fall, the worker was left trapped between the platform and an exterior wall of the garage. Continue reading

Authorities say three workers were injured on the job in New Bedford, Massachusetts while they were renovating a three-story house according to a recent news article in the Boston Herald. The injured workers were on the third floor of the home trying to remove the porch. They were planning to remove the third floor and porch on the second floor, so they could install new windows on the home. While they were working to remove the porch, it fell off the side of the home, and the three workers fell around 25 feet to the ground.

mYDyjiyOne worker was 39-years-old at the time of the accident, and he and his 42-year-old coworker both reportedly suffered neck and back injuries. The two of them were taken to hospital, where they were treated and released.   The other worker, who is 34-years-old, suffered a leg injury, but he declined medical attention and reportedly told police he planned to drive himself to a local hospital later. According to a recent news report from The Boston Globe, a worker in Brockton was injured on the job during a roofing project when bricks from the home’s chimney came loose and fell on one of the roofers working on the home.

mlJEPNiWitnesses say the worker was hired to help install a new roof on a two-and-a-half story home in Brockton. The worker was wearing a safety harness, as required by the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and local building codes while working on the roof. While the harnesses are very effective at preventing workers from falling of a roof, on this particular day, the line from the safety harness’s rig became tangled around the chimney. While construction work has gotten a great deal safer than it once was, ironwork is still one of the most dangerous jobs in America. The job involves constantly working at dangerous heights with little protection, and also working around thousands of pounds of iron and steal that may collapse or shift at any moment in the event of an accident.

1626R-11328According to a recent article from The Boston Globe, an ironworker was injured on the job at Logan Internal Airport in East Boston. Authorities say the 53-year-old worker suffered a critical injury when he was trying to secure a concrete panel weighing over 30 tons. A crane was suspending the heavy concrete panel at a height of around 40 feet off the ground. It was being lifted to the third floor of a parking garage being constructed at the airport.
